More in Common in Action

Join the Jo Cox Foundation for the More in Common in Action event in Manchester with a keynote session from Dr Gareth Harris.

What is this event about?

A national showcase of the More in Common Network with opportunities to learn valuable skills for community building from several experts in the field.

At the session we will:

• Learn more about how anti-minority groups work in localities and how communities can resist them
• Hear inspiring stories from More In Common groups and Partnerships across the Network
• Take part in workshops on topics linked to the More In Common values, such as building connections and facilitating cultural exchanges
• Connect, learn and share experiences with More In Common Network members and others
• Be part of the development of the Network, sharing your ideas and priorities
• Find out how to get involved, or organise a More In Common local group or Partnership in your area
• Network, have some lovely food and get to know people who are doing similar work to you across the country

Who is the event for?

We welcome you to take part in this event if you:

• are already involved in the More in Common Network as a group, partnership or individual
• want to learn more about and from the More in Common Network
• want to build valuable connections with others across the country
• are enthusiastic about community cohesion and building feelings of belonging

Access

The venue is in Spinningfields, Manchester. The venue is accessible for people with mobility difficulties, with accessible toilets, hearing loops, parking including Blue Badge spaces and near a bus route.

After you register we will send you the full details of the venue including access.

Dr Gareth Harris is an independent researcher affiliated to the Centre for Trust, Peace and Social Relations (Coventry University). His research focuses on how extremist groups engage people in local communities and community-based initiatives to counter extremism. He has an interest in how grassroots organisations and local authorities can work together to addresses extremism concerns and empower communities.

Community Organisers is a growing movement of people involved in community organising. They offer training opportunities and give people the chance to share their stories and learn from each other, inspiring many more people to get involved in community action.

Civil Society Consulting is a non-profit, with a mission to advance health, equality and social solidarity by supporting UK civil society. They provide free support to grassroots organisations through their Nurturing The Grassroots initiative and have developed the 32 Steps to Togetherness which outlines steps we can all take as individuals and as community leaders to build connections.

The Roots Programme run programmes that bridge gaps, transcend social bubbles, and create lasting relationships across key facets of society. By building community through cultural exchange initiatives, they bring people together who might never otherwise connect, creating opportunities for insight and understanding that foster curiosity, compassion, and connection.

Modern Cockney are a More in Common group based in East London. A collaborative project between Grow Social Capital and Bengali East End Heritage Society, Modern Cockney host The Modern Cockney Festival each year. They have created a pocket museum for the festival which creates an accessible and creative way for communities to engage with their local area. Working with the More in Common Cardiff partnership, a pocket museum has also been made for Splott.
