At the Jo Cox Foundation, we believe in the power of connection and the fundamental importance of tackling loneliness. Inspired by Jo’s vision of a more compassionate and connected society and with the support of funding from the Astra Foundation, we are establishing a new Loneliness Policy Action Group for the voluntary sector, which will play a pivotal role in addressing one of the most pressing social issues of our time.
Loneliness affects millions of people across the UK. It doesn’t discriminate by age, background, or circumstance and can have a profound impact on physical and mental health, as well as on community cohesion. The Loneliness Policy Action Group aims to build on Jo’s legacy by driving meaningful change through collaboration, research, and advocacy.
What We’re Doing
The Loneliness Policy Action Group will bring together stakeholders from across society to:
- Shape Evidence-Based Policy:
- By harnessing the latest research and data, we aim to identify effective interventions and policy approaches to reduce loneliness. Our focus will be on practical solutions that can be implemented at both national and local levels.
- Champion Collaboration:
- We will work in partnership with policymakers, charities and community leaders to create a unified approach to tackling loneliness. Collaboration is key to amplifying impact and ensuring that no one feels left behind.
- Raise Awareness:
- By highlighting the scale and impact of loneliness, we will ensure it remains a priority on the national agenda. Through campaigns and public engagement, we’ll inspire action and foster understanding.
- Advocate for Change:
- We will engage with government and other decision-makers to advocate for policies that create connected communities and provide the resources needed to combat loneliness effectively.
Why It Matters
Jo Cox famously said, “Young or old, loneliness doesn’t discriminate.” Her tireless work laid the groundwork for a national conversation about loneliness, leading to the appointment of the UK’s first Minister for Loneliness and a cross-government strategy. The Loneliness Policy Group will build on this momentum, ensuring that progress continues and that policies are informed by the voices of those with lived experience.
Get Involved
Loneliness is a shared challenge, but it’s one we can tackle together. Whether you’re a policymaker, community leader, researcher, or passionate individual, we invite you to join us in this vital work. Together, we can create a society where everyone feels valued, connected, and supported.
Stay tuned for updates as we develop this exciting initiative and work to make Jo’s vision a reality.
